As my trainer was showing me around the store, I realized that there was an abundance of cowboy hats being sold. As she showed me the cleaning supplies, I hummed along to the country station on the radio. I happily greeted the scruffy truckers, and smiled to myself as a man in his chaps wandered around the store. It didn't take long to figure out that I was going to like it.
During my break, I wandered over to Subway. I'd heard a rumor about half price sammiches for employees, and I was starving. Tayler practically jumped over the counter to greet me, and quickly helped to satisfy my grumbling stomach. You can't beat 2.70 for a Sandwich. ESPECIALLY if it has bacon on it AND it was made by an amazing person like Tayler. Deeefreakinlicious.
Sandra didn't seem too happy to have to babysit me, but her opinion seemed to improve when she went to clean the bathrooms and realized that I'd already beaten her to it.
Most of it was pretty simple. Stock, Scan, Smile. You got it, dude.
The only part that I struggled with was the Tobacco. Working at a country store/truckstop, I suppose we sell a lot of it. I just wish I could thank the kind truckers for being so patient with me when they asked for products that I was completely clueless about. Heck, there were several times when I had to use deductive reasoning to figure out that they hadn't said they wanted a can of snuffleupagus.
They gave me an employee cup. It was basically a refillable coffee mug that I get unlimited refills on. This may have been a mistake on their part seeing as I drank far too much caffeine which lead to my staying up far too late on a school night to blog about Sesame Street Characters.
As I was driving home, I realized I was the ONLY car on the freeway. My rear view mirrors were pitch black. A thrilling chill went up my spine. I smiled and glanced up at the sky. I could see stars. Ahead of me, my headlights shone on the dark curvy freeway. Everywhere behind me was simply a black wall of satin. It was beautiful.
Soon, the horizon started the glow as if the sun had just gone down. I watched the skyline grow larger as I creeped towards my home.
Here I am, thinking about the difference that 18 miles can make. Sin City and a Truck Stop crawling with cowboys. It's like two completely different worlds.
One things for sure,
I just want a cowboy hat.
