Today, I went on a bike ride. It was beautiful. It was bright and sunny, and the music on my ipod was just perfect. There's nothing quite like flying across the pavement while singing "ridin' solo" or "we are the champions." My day was going lovely, and I didn't want to head home.
But, we had to.
As we headed in the door, we didn't realize that we were walking into a storm. My bright sunny mood was turned into a hurricane.
As soon as I could escape, I did. I headed to my room and turned on music. I sent a text to Dylan to find out what he was doing. I needed to escape.
As I was walking to Dylan's, his car pulled up beside me. I climbed in, and we headed to his house.
As I entered his living room, a brief, snippy comment was exchanged between him and his mom. With a few harsh words, he stormed out, slamming the frontdoor on his way outside.
Silently, I followed him.
We sat side by side in the side yard, not a word was exchanged. Birds sang, airplanes flew overhead, the grass swayed in the wind. The minutes ticked past quietly.
It wasn't awkward, it was peaceful and comforting knowing that even though we were both dealing with our own problems, we were still sitting there on the same wall. Sometimes, that's really all you need. Someone to sit there beside you, letting you know that they're there.
I'm really glad that in our friendship, there are no awkward silences. Some people find the need to fill up the quiet with pointless babbling, but we don't... and I like it.
